Graffiti Determent

A multi-faceted approach proposed by the Arts District Business Watch in the Spring of 2025 seeks to lessen the impact of unwanted graffiti. The proposal below features unique options for businesses to take charge of graffiti in our area by offering resources to report and cleanup existing graffiti through a downloadable “Toolkit” of resources; as well as, a power point with a high overview of the current state of the neighborhood that includes short and long term ideas for graffiti abatement including sanctuary alleys and walls, art parks and community mural activations.

Creative Solutions for a Cleaner, More Vibrant Neighborhood

Graffiti vandalism is a challenge faced by many urban communities—including ours. But rather than just painting over the problem (which you can do- see the downloadable toolkit above), the Business Watch is committed to a more restorative, creative, and community-driven solution. We believe in transforming blank walls and frequently tagged areas into canvases of public art that reflect the heart and soul of our community. We also know there is no one solution to the graffiti issue and we understand it is multi-faceted issue that we as a community can navigate together.

Murals That Tell Our Story

Murals have been proven to deter unwanted graffiti while also adding vibrancy and pride to neighborhoods. These pieces of art celebrate local history, highlight neighborhood culture, and give artists—from seasoned professionals to local students—a platform to shine. We are working to identify high-visibility walls and connect with muralists and community members to create impactful, long-lasting art.

Sanctuary Alleys: Spaces to Create, Not Destroy

We’re proposing the creation of Sanctuary Alleys—designated public art zones where graffiti and street art are welcomed and celebrated. These spaces give artists a legal and constructive outlet while helping to reduce tagging in unwanted areas. Sanctuary Alleys also create walkable, photo-worthy corridors that can increase foot traffic and benefit nearby small businesses.

Community Cleanups & Youth Engagement

We believe that beautification starts with participation. Regular neighborhood cleanups not only keep our streets looking great—they build community. We're organizing seasonal cleanup days that include:

  • 🌿 Graffiti removal

  • 🧽 Power-washing

  • 🪴 Planting flowers or greenery

  • 🖍️ Youth-led chalk art or mini mural painting

We especially encourage involving local students in mural design, painting days, and cleanup events. Not only does it give them a sense of ownership and pride—it helps build a lifelong connection to their neighborhood.

Get Involved!

Whether you're an artist, a resident, a business owner, or just someone who loves Richmond’s vibrant culture, there’s a way for you to get involved:

  • Nominate a wall for a mural: email Artsdistrictbusinesswatch@gmail.com with a picture of your wall and the address.

  • Volunteer at a neighborhood cleanup via a civic association like the HJWA.org or Richmondartsdistrict.com

  • Sponsor a community paint day

  • Help us identify locations for a Sanctuary Alley

  • Invite local youth groups to participate

Together, we can replace vandalism with vision and create a neighborhood that reflects who we are: colorful, creative, and united.
